Minimum Education Department Qualification Requirements

The Queensland Department of Education requires that  a chaplain “holds a Certificate IV in Pastoral Care, Youth Work, or Chaplaincy and Pastoral Care, or an equivalent or higher qualification; and the certificate or equivalent/higher qualification must include competencies in ‘making appropriate referrals’ and ‘mental health’.”

Workers may hold other qualifications or aggregated experience  that may be deemed as being equivalent to, or higher than, the minimum requirements, provided they are related to and aligned with the requirements of the role, and include the three units of competency or equivalent.

Qualification Waivers

 In some instances, the Queensland Department of Education may consider an applicant to commence with a Qualifications waiver. Candidates on a waiver will need to complete the 3 compulsory units within 6 months of their appointment and fully obtain the minimum qualification, or equivalent, within twelve months of appointment.

SU Requirements

The chaplain’s salary bands at SU Chaplaincy follow a sequential and stepped progression determined by the Chaplain’s qualifications and experience. To progress to higher bands a chaplain is required to hold a relevant Diploma or higher qualification.
